Located in Zambézia province, this 40 MW facility is a crucial step towards sustainable energy in a nation rich in hydro, gas, and solar potential but struggling with transmission and rural access challenges.
CESOM is a public-private partnership involving Norfund, Scatec Solar, and Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM). It integrates with the national grid, stabilizing power supply in northern provinces prone to outages.
The project’s impact goes beyond energy generation: It has created over 1,200 jobs during construction, implemented a Livelihood Restoration Plan for 223 displaced families, offering agricultural training, micro-business opportunities, and infrastructure improvements. Furthermore, CESOM produces 79 GWh of renewable energy annually, reducing carbon emissions by 79,000 tonnes per year. Last but not least, it helps diversify Mozambique’s energy mix, reducing reliance on vulnerable hydropower.
EDM, Norfund and Scatec Solar are paving the way for future projects like the Metoro solar plant, attracting foreign investment and fostering economic growth. As a pioneering project, it serves as a model for clean energy development in Africa.
