At the African Green Economy Secretariat (AGES), we are passionate about highlighting transformative sustainability projects that not only uplift communities across Africa but also play a crucial role in protecting our planet and cutting down CO2 emissions. One such exemplary initiative is the BRILHO Programme.
In a fantastic achievement, the BRILHO Programme has brought renewable energy to over 2.2 million Mozambicans in off-grid areas across all Mozambican provinces. This initiative, which was spearheaded by the Mozambican Government, British Aid, the Swedish Government and SNV, aims to elevate access to energy for businesses and communities. BRILHO has not only lit up homes but also ignited economic growth and environmental sustainability.
Already by early 2024, BRILHO had provided 1.3 million people with solar systems and nearly 1 million with improved cooking solutions, cutting down CO2 emissions by over 560,000 tonnes! Furthermore, the programme has empowered more than 32,000 micro-entrepreneurs, fostering much needed local economic development.
BRILHO’s success has brought £33.7 million in private-sector investments and created nearly 2,000 jobs. Its impact extends into policy, with the programme supporting the Mozambican government in crafting regulations that make the country more appealing to renewable energy investors.
Recognizing these remarkable outcomes, the stakeholders have extended BRILHO until October 2026, injecting an additional £8.7 million. This boost, bringing total funding to £38 million, reaffirms the programme’s vital role in Mozambique’s green development and promises an even brighter future for its people.
We commend the BRILHO programme for its groundbreaking results and efforts and can’t wait to see what the future holds for Mozambique’s green development.
