AfDB Supports Togo’s Renewable Future with 62 MWp Solar Project

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a €26.5 million financing package for the development of a 62 MWp solar photovoltaic power plant in Sokodé, northern Togo. This project is a key step towards the country’s goal of 200 MWp of renewable energy capacity by 2030, supporting the Togo M300 energy compact to enhance energy security and reduce dependence on thermal power.

The financing includes a €18.5 million loan from AfDB and an €8 million concessional loan from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA). Proparco, a French development finance agency, and Électricité de France (EDF), a leading French utility company, are co-financing the project and overseeing its development.

Once operational, the Sokodé solar plant will generate 87 GWh of electricity annually, providing clean, reliable, and affordable power to communities. The plant will also cut annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 13,600 tonnes, supporting Togo’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. This initiative highlights the AfDB’s dedication to promoting sustainable energy across Africa as part of its “Light Up and Power Africa” agenda. The project will support Togo’s renewable energy targets, stimulate local economic growth, and strengthen the country’s energy security.

The partnership between AfDB, SEFA, Proparco, and EDF demonstrates effective public-private collaboration driving Africa’s energy transition. The Sokodé solar plant serves as a model for future renewable energy projects in the region, showcasing the potential of clean energy investments in emerging markets.
