Africa Empowers Sustainable Growth with New AI Strategy

The African Union (AU) has formally designated the Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategy for Africa as a central priority for the continent’s inclusive development. Announced during a High-Level Policy Dialogue on the Development and Regulation of Artificial Intelligence in Africa in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), this initiative marks a significant shift towards integrating Artificial Intelligence into Africa’s broader economic, educational, and digital transformation agendas. The strategy focuses on developing local capacity, supporting African-led research, and tailoring digital tools to address regional challenges. A key component is the emphasis on building robust digital infrastructure, including renewable energy-powered data centres and regional computing hubs. These foundations aim to enable the scalable implementation of AI solutions that address Africa’s distinct challenges. The AU’s strategy promotes a multi-sector governance framework that guarantees ethical and accountable AI applications. Collaboration among governments, academia, and the private sector is considered essential for seamless implementation and risk mitigation. By encouraging national roadmaps, legal frameworks, and public sector training aligned with AU standards, the strategy seeks to promote both innovation and accountability.

Regional cooperation is another cornerstone, with a focus on sharing technical expertise and building cross-border capacity. Regular assessment of emerging AI risks and updating regulatory frameworks are critical to ensuring that technological progress aligns with the public interest and safeguards democratic values. International engagement is also a priority. The African Union is advocating for increased representation of Africa in global AI governance discussions. Sustainable funding and political commitment, along with the involvement of the diaspora, are considered essential for scaling AI initiatives.

As Africa prepares for the next round of discussions at the AU Summit in 2026, the implementation phase will be decisive. Effective execution could position Africa as a leader in sustainable digital transformation, narrowing the digital divide while generating broad-based economic opportunities across the continent.
