Mozambique’s Green Energy Leap: AfDB Backs Landmark Wind Farm Project

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $54 million loan to help construct Mozambique’s first large-scale wind farm. The Namaacha Wind Farm will be located 50 km from Maputo, Mozambique’s capital, and will generate 331.6 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually. This 120 MW wind farm is part of a larger $224.5 million project that involves multiple international financing organizations. The project aims to diversify Mozambique’s energy mix, which is currently heavily reliant on hydropower and gas.

The wind farm will provide affordable and clean energy to both local consumers and regional markets. It is expected to create 600 jobs during construction, targeting 120 employment opportunities for women and 300 for Mozambique’s youth. An important environmental benefit is the reduction of approximately 72 thousand tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, supporting Mozambique’s commitment to the Paris climate agreement.

The AfDB’s leadership highlighted the project’s significance, noting that it will enhance energy security, support economic growth, and position Mozambique as a regional energy hub. Furthermore, the wind farm aligns with the country’s goal of achieving universal electricity access by 2030.
