As artificial intelligence (AI) expands rapidly across Africa, corporate leaders face a growing dilemma about leveraging AI’s benefits while managing its environmental impact. AI systems require immense computational power, with some data centers consuming electricity equivalent to that used by 100,000 households. In regions where power grids rely on fossil fuels, such as South Africa, this surge in energy demand risks increasing carbon emissions and undermining climate goals.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise has proposed a structured approach to support sustainable AI. It focuses on five areas of improvement, namely equipment efficiency, energy efficiency, resource efficiency, software efficiency and data efficiency. Improving data efficiency presents the most immediate opportunity to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact. Many African businesses are still developing data readiness for AI adoption. Reducing data debt by eliminating outdated and duplicated information, consolidating storage systems, and processing data closer to its source can improve energy performance and the effectiveness of AI systems. Preparing clean datasets before model training can also lead to measurable gains in efficiency.
The environmental impact of AI is becoming increasingly important in Africa, a continent already facing climate-related challenges. Sustainable AI is not just a technical issue but a strategic requirement. In the context of the green economy, where economic growth must go hand in hand with low-carbon development and responsible resource use, managing AI’s footprint is essential.
