Rwanda Secures Major UN Investment for Vision 2050 Goals

The United Nations has pledged $1.04 billion to support Rwanda’s development between 2025 and 2029 under the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF). Signed on May 20, 2025, by Finance Minister Yusuf Murangwa and UN Resident Coordinator Ozonnia Ojielo, the agreement solidifies Rwanda’s collaboration with the UN. It aims to accelerate the country’s transition to upper-middle-income status by 2035 and high-income status by 2050, in alignment with the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2) and Vision 2050.

The UNSDCF outlines support for four priority areas, advancing equitable economic growth, human capital development, climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and transformative governance. These initiatives will be implemented through collaborative programs involving the government, civil society, private sector, and development partners. Over 50 institutions and agencies contributed to the framework’s design through national consultations. Key interventions include promoting innovation, improving education and healthcare, supporting gender equality, and addressing child nutrition. Additional focus areas include job creation, reducing the trade deficit through domestic industry promotion, and advancing digital and green economic transformation. The initiative builds on the previous UNSDCF (2018–2024), which mobilized $631 million. The new commitment adopts innovative financing models and prioritizes institutional capacity-building, data-driven governance, and citizen participation.

Officials emphasize that the framework aligns with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while responding to regional challenges such as climate change and security threats. It also marks the UN’s 80th anniversary, reflecting a sustained commitment to inclusive and resilient development in Rwanda. By improving public services and promoting strategic reforms, the UNSDCF will drive lasting contributions to national stability, prosperity, and equitable growth for Rwandans.
