Dr. Dion George, the South African Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, has engaged with the South African Plastics Pact members to promote the country’s circular economy. This initiative highlights the department’s dedication to sustainability, job creation, and economic growth through innovative environmental solutions.
Dr. George emphasized leveraging the private sector to build a sustainable future while aligning with international efforts for cleaner environments. The South African Plastics Pact, led by GreenCape, brings together 50 organizations, including major industry players such as Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Woolworths, accounting for 35% of South Africa’s plastic economy. The Pact has made significant progress towards its 2025 goals, notably reducing plastic straw use by 91%, achieving a 45% recycling rate, and increasing the average recycled content in packaging to 18%.
During the recent engagement, the Minister addressed concerns about regulatory uncertainty and complexities surrounding Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), which are essential for evaluating the environmental impact of plastics. He announced plans to review Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations and resolve issues related to the proliferation of Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs) that hinder the plastics value chain.
By collaborating with the private sector, the department aims to streamline regulations, clarify LCA methodologies, and optimize PRO roles. These efforts will enable businesses to innovate, reduce environmental harm, and promote economic prosperity.
The department highlighted that these collective actions are crucial in addressing plastic waste, promoting circularity, and tackling the global challenges of plastic pollution and climate change.
